Cyber Police Department warns of fraudulent navigation apps

Criminals spread malware through fake smartphone applications

The Cyber Police Department has uncovered a scheme involving the distribution of malware disguised as free navigation tools with offline maps. Users are enticed to download files via third-party resources and Telegram bots, which allows perpetrators to gain full control over the target device. This was reported by Кіберполіція України, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

Malicious actors use social media advertising to attract users to fraudulent software. They promise navigation services that work without an internet connection and are free of ads, serving as a lure to encourage the installation of dangerous files.

Mechanism of malware operation

Clicking on an ad link redirects the user to a website controlled by the attackers. From there, the potential victim is directed to a Telegram bot used to distribute the infected files.

To complete the installation, the system prompts the user to allow installation from unknown sources. Granting extended permissions to smartphone features enables the attackers to intercept incoming SMS, contact lists, and notifications, as well as gain remote control over the device interface.

Cyber threat protection

Such manipulations allow criminals to monitor data entered by the user, which directly threatens the security of bank accounts. Experts emphasize the need to ignore any app downloads from external links in messengers or social networks.

The only safe way to obtain applications remains through official content stores. Users should critically evaluate any requests for access to the camera, microphone, SMS, and accessibility features of the operating system.

If a suspicious file has already been installed, law enforcement officers advise immediate removal of the app and updating credentials for all important accounts. It is also crucial to review bank transactions and notify the financial institution about a potential data leak to block accounts.
