The SBU found an increased radiation background on the wreckage of a Russian drone after an attack on the Chernihiv region. Elements of depleted uranium were found in the warhead of the missile, which the Russian Federation used together with the Geranium-2.
The Security Service of Ukraine announced the discovery of an increased radiation background on the wreckage of the Russian strike drone, with which Russian troops attacked the Chernihiv region on the night of April 7, 2026, informs the PromPolitInform portal.
We are talking about fragments of a R-60 air-to-air missile found near the village of Kamka. According to the SBU, Russian troops install such missiles on modified Geran-2 strike drones.
The special service noted that these missiles are used during massive attacks to destroy Ukrainian aircraft and helicopters that intercept enemy drones.
During radiation reconnaissance near the wreckage, a gamma radiation level of 12 μSv/h was recorded, which, according to the SBU, significantly exceeds the natural radiation background and poses a danger to human health.

Depleted uranium found in warhead
The SBU, together with units of the State Emergency Service and the Defense Forces, brought the warhead of the rocket to a safe condition and transported it to the place of storage of radioactive waste.
According to the results of the research, it was established that the warhead of the missile contained damaging elements from depleted uranium, in particular the isotopes Uran-235 and Uran-238.
On this fact, SBU investigators opened criminal proceedings under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – “war crimes.” Procedural management is carried out by the Chernihiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

The SBU urged not to touch the wreckage
The secret service stressed that the greatest danger is posed by damaged or burned ammunition, which can emit radioactive dust.
Citizens were urged not to approach the wreckage of drones, missiles or other ammunition, not to touch them and not to move them.
In case of detection of suspicious objects, the SBU is recommended to move to a safe distance and report this by calling the SBU, the State Emergency Service or the National Police.
