During his visit to Sweden, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a declaration with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on deepening defense cooperation between the countries.
The broadcast of the signing of the agreement was conducted by the Office of the President of Ukraine, informs the portal PromPolitInform.
One of the key decisions was the official agreement on the transfer of JAS 39 Gripen fighters to Ukraine.
According to the head of the Swedish government Kristersson, Sweden plans to transfer 16 Gripen C/D fighters to Ukraine by 2030. At the first stage, the agreement provides for the purchase of 20 new aircraft for the needs of the Swedish Air Force, after which the existing fighters will be able to transfer to Ukraine.
Ukraine will receive 16 Gripen free of charge
Sweden will officially transfer 16 Gripen C and D series fighters to Ukraine. In addition, Kyiv plans to purchase another 22 new aircraft of modern modification.
“We pass on Gripen. Ukraine will purchase 22 new Gripen models,” said Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
Earlier, Sweden had already transferred Hawk anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine, and fighters should become the next stage in strengthening Ukrainian air defense.
The first deliveries can begin in 10 months
Kristersson said that the official start of deliveries of Gripen is expected in 2027. At the same time, Vladimir Zelensky said that Ukraine expects to receive the first aircraft much earlier – in December 2026 or January 2027.
“We expect to receive the first Gripen in the next 10 months, we will do our best on our part,” the president said.
During the visit to Sweden, meetings of the Ukrainian delegation with representatives of the Swedish defense industry are also planned.
