Former minister will advise Italy on defense tech while remaining in Ukraine
Former Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has been appointed adviser to Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto on defence innovations. Despite his new international role, the official will continue working in Ukraine. The parties discussed cooperation on drones, air defence, and autonomous systems. This was reported by Ukrinform citing press service of Mykhailo Fedorov, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
Fedorov announced the start of an international trip dedicated to digitalisation and defence technologies following his first meeting with Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto. The Ukrainian official expressed gratitude for the trust and the invitation to contribute to the development of Italy’s defence sector.
In his new role, Fedorov will assist the Italian military in adapting to new security challenges and integrating modern warfare technologies. He noted that Ukraine possesses unique practical experience in high-tech warfare and is ready to share this expertise with international partners.
Negotiation details and government reshuffle context
During official talks, both sides discussed the operational use of drones, autonomous systems, air defence capabilities, and the expansion of the defence tech ecosystem. Fedorov emphasized that Ukraine’s experience could serve as the foundation for a new European defence model.
“The future of defence belongs to countries capable of rapidly testing and scaling new solutions by combining technology with strong manufacturing,” Fedorov stressed, adding that his primary focus remains working on Ukrainian domestic projects and securing international support.
The leadership changes in the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine followed the Parliament’s vote on 14 July to accept the resignation of Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, which led to the dissolution of the entire cabinet. Public protests against Fedorov’s removal took place in several cities throughout July.
The President of Ukraine offered Fedorov several alternative positions, including Deputy Prime Minister for Military Innovations. However, the former minister declined these offers, stating he would only agree to serve as Minister of Defence.
Subsequently, on 18 August, the President submitted a nomination to the Verkhovna Rada appointing Yevhenii Khmara as Minister of Defence. On 19 August, Ukrainian lawmakers approved the appointment with 312 votes in favour.
