The European project aims to reduce the technological gap with the US and China
The European joint undertaking EuroHPC is investing 450 million dollars in the development of the LUMI-AI supercomputer. The system, designed for artificial intelligence training, will become operational in Finland in the second half of 2027. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Ольга Завада) citing Reuters, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The agreement to construct the computing complex represents a record contract for the French company Bull. This asset was previously acquired by the French government from the loss-making consortium Atos for 404 million euros.
The financial burden is shared equally between the EuroHPC structure and the LUMI AI Factory consortium. The latter includes representatives from six countries: Finland, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland.
The future supercomputer will be installed at Finnish facilities alongside the existing LUMI system. Its technical specifications will enable large-scale artificial intelligence model training and complex scientific simulations.
Technological Backbone of the System
Computing performance will be provided by leading technology manufacturers. Utilizing AMD chips will create a viable alternative to Nvidia solutions that currently dominate the market.
Data storage integration will be managed by IBM, while network infrastructure deployment will be handled by Nokia. These partnerships are part of a broader EU strategy to bolster indigenous high-tech capabilities.
The initiative is being implemented under the overall EuroHPC budget for 2021–2027, which totals 8.2 billion euros. Today, the organization already operates a network of 19 centers utilizing 12 supercomputers.
Testing New Capacities
European developers have already begun testing existing systems. The provider OVHcloud has completed training a foundational model on the German Jupiter supercomputer.
Meanwhile, the Italian startup Domyn, leading the EUROPA consortium, is utilizing EuroHPC resources to train its own 400-billion-parameter AI model. While the companies have not disclosed detailed specifications, they aim to become European leaders in the advanced artificial intelligence sector.
