Sweden to deploy Patriot systems to Poland to protect arms shipments to Ukraine

Sweden will deploy Patriot air defense systems in eastern Poland to protect the NATO logistics hub used to supply weapons to Ukraine. The operation will begin in December, and approximately 100 Swedish military personnel will also be sent to Poland. Reuters reported this, as cited by Holovne in UA and the PromPolitInform portal.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated that the Swedish Patriot systems would replace those currently provided by the Netherlands.

About 100 military personnel from an air defense unit based in Halmstad will participate in the mission. Swedish authorities have not specified exactly how many Patriot systems will be sent to Poland.

“The objective of both the Gripen and Patriot deployments is to protect the NATO logistics hub at the airport in Poland,” Kristersson said.

Last week, Sweden also announced the deployment of Gripen fighter jets to Poland as part of a NATO air policing mission.

In September, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, citing intelligence data, stated that Russia might be preparing “hybrid” attacks using drones and missiles against countries that support Ukraine. At the same time, Vladimir Putin stated last week that Russia allegedly “has no intention of attacking anyone,” but threatened a response in the event of “aggression.”
