Quantum Systems to Supply Ukraine with Tens of Thousands of SPYS Interceptor Drones

Partners are developing high-speed systems to counter Russian jet-powered UAVs

German company Quantum Systems plans to provide Ukraine with tens of thousands of SPYS interceptor drones designed to counter Russian jet-powered UAVs. The first thousands of units are expected to be ready for delivery this year. This was reported by Ukrinform, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

The letter of intent was signed by the company during a briefing in Berlin, as announced by Vice President Matthias Lena. The new technology is a collaborative effort between the German manufacturer and their Ukrainian partner WIY, operating under the joint venture Quantum WIY Industries.

Joint Development for Sky Defense

In developing the SPYS model, engineers incorporated insights gained from the field deployment of previous systems, such as the STRILA drones. The production scale-up for these new interceptors will rely on existing manufacturing facilities, enabling a production capacity of several thousand units per month.

According to Matthias Lena, the effectiveness of countering Russian Geran-4 and Geran-5 jet drones in Ukraine has shown positive momentum. While the interception rate was initially very low, it has recently climbed above 50% due to the employment of integrated defense measures, including F-16 jets and specialized UAVs.

Efficacy of Countermeasures

The company representative emphasized that this success is the result of combining various defense capabilities. Integrating Ukrainian solutions with Western technology allows for the effective neutralization of emerging threats in the airspace.

It is worth noting that on October 4, during the Ukrainian-German Business Forum, the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine officially finalized agreements regarding the testing and supply of these systems. Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed successful trials of the high-speed interceptor designed specifically to neutralize jet-powered Russian drones.
