SBU detains a soldier who adjusted Russian strikes after returning from AWOL

The Security Service of Ukraine has exposed an informant for Russian intelligence services who, after returning from unauthorized absence from his military unit, adjusted shelling against the positions of his own ZSU regiment. The suspect was apprehended while preparing new strikes and is currently in custody. This is reported by the portal PromPolitInform, citing information from Security Service of Ukraine.

The exposed individual was mobilized into the Armed Forces of Ukraine but left his unit’s location without authorization during his service. While in the status of a deserter, he began seeking opportunities for quick earnings through themed messengers, where he was recruited by representatives of the Russian Federation.

Details of recruitment and espionage

Upon receiving instructions from enemy intelligence services, the individual returned to his military unit. The agent’s primary goal was to gather intelligence regarding the deployment of personnel, the location of military equipment, and training grounds. It was established that the suspect transmitted geolocations of the battalion’s temporary deployment sites to the occupiers.

Detention of the traitor

To cover his activities, the man feigned a need for medical attention and left the unit under the pretext of visiting a hospital. However, instead of seeking treatment, he hid at his residence in the city of Kremenchuk. Security Service specialists promptly identified his illegal actions, secured the Defense Forces’ positions, and subsequently detained the spotter.

During searches, law enforcement officials seized a smartphone from the detainee that was used for communication with his Russian handler. Investigators documented the use of anonymous chats and the systematic deletion of correspondence for the purpose of conspiracy.

Consequences for the spotter

The individual has been notified of suspicion for committing high treason, as provided for in Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The court selected a preventive measure in the form of detention without the possibility of bail. Under current legislation, the perpetrator faces life imprisonment and the confiscation of all his assets.

A complex operation to expose the enemy informant was carried out by SBU officers in the Kharkiv and Poltava regions. Procedural oversight in this case is being conducted by the Poltava Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in the sphere of defense of the Central region.
