The maneuvers near the RF border are the first of their kind since the 1960s
Sweden has organized its first large-scale evacuation training for civilians on the island of Gotland since the 1960s. The exercises, which ran from October 5 to October 8, involved hundreds of officials and volunteers. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Валерій Ульяненко) citing Le Monde, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
Practical drills held on October 7 involved approximately 200 civilians. To complicate the scenario and test the emergency services’ effectiveness, some volunteers role-played as vulnerable individuals, including those requiring extra support.
Baltic Sea security management
The exercises engaged various government bodies, including armed forces, law enforcement, the transport authority, and regional administrators. The primary goal was to enhance inter-agency coordination and test logistical routes for relocating people to safe zones within the island.
It should be noted that evacuation to the Swedish mainland was not part of the maneuvers. Local authorities emphasize that the exercises are routine, aimed at improving infrastructure readiness rather than responding to an immediate security crisis.
A strategic asset in the Baltic Sea
Gotland holds a critical position in the Baltic Sea security architecture, being located less than 350 kilometers from the RF’s Kaliningrad Oblast. Control over this territory provides significant advantages for monitoring and securing maritime and aerial routes.
Due to the Russian aggression against Ukraine, Stockholm has substantially reinforced its defense on the island while restoring its national civil defense system. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recently voiced repeated concerns over NATO’s activities near its borders.
Russian officials have also issued threats regarding a hypothetical blockade of the Kaliningrad Oblast, claiming Moscow is prepared to use its entire arsenal, including nuclear weapons.
