The actions of the current US president have significantly affected the country's international image
Donald Trump has fundamentally changed the political course of the United States, leading to the country's loss of status as a global moral authority. Analysts point to the erosion of the symbolic capital that Washington had cultivated for decades. This was reported by Glavcom, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
Over the past decades, the United States remained not only a powerful economic player but also a key benchmark for the Western world, broadcasting its own model of democracy and freedom. This status as a ‘beacon’ allowed Washington to maintain global influence by relying on the appealing image of its political system and values.
Loss of symbolic capital
A significant portion of US global influence was based on the world’s confidence in the inevitability of the American path toward a democratic future. This allowed the country to justify certain political steps through arguments regarding aid to the weak or countering dictatorial regimes.
However, current President Donald Trump has radically altered the approach to traditional rhetoric and international relations, revising the logic of dialogue with both allies and authoritarian leaders. Such transformations have caused the ‘American dream’ to lose its ethical dimension in the eyes of the international community.
Consequences for foreign policy
According to observers, even a potential change of power in the future will not be enough to instantly restore trust in the American model, as a significant portion of voters supported the current path. Abandoning the role of a global role model calls into question the effectiveness of the traditional instruments of influence used by previous administrations.
