Domestic industry recorded zero steel output last month due to infrastructure destruction
Russian missile strikes completely halted steel production in Ukraine last month following the destruction of blast furnaces at metallurgical plants. This was stated by Ukrmetallurgprom association president Oleksandr Kalenkov. This was reported by Ukrinform citing the Ukrainian Radio, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The head of the industry association described the current state of the domestic mining and metals sector as tragic for a 150-year-old industry. According to him, historical annual production figures reached 42 million tons, accounting for more than a third of last year’s total European Union output.
Consequences of missile strikes on plants
Massive shelling involving ballistic and cruise missiles began in August, targeting production facilities directly. Virtually all blast furnaces that were still operational suffered critical damage.
Earlier state statistics recorded steel output at 2.87 million tons in the first five months of the current year. This figure represented a 6.1% decrease compared to the same period of the previous year.
