United States extends temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens

Immigration protection remained in force for approximately 240,000 people

US authorities have preserved temporary protected status for citizens of Ukraine, which was set to expire on October 19. This immigration protection covers approximately 240,000 Ukrainian citizens. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Іван Носальський) citing Reuters, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

The agency stated that relevant official announcements regarding Ukrainians and Sudanese will be released in due course. However, their current immigration protection remains in effect despite previous deadlines.

This development occurs against the backdrop of the US administration’s efforts to secure the deportation of certain foreign nationals. Previously, protection has already been canceled for citizens of Haiti, Venezuela, Somalia, Yemen, Syria, and other countries.

Temporary protected status mechanism

Temporary Protected Status allows individuals who are already in the US to remain in the country and work legally if their home countries experience natural disasters, armed conflicts, or other extraordinary conditions.

As of now, it is known that approximately 240,000 Ukrainians have received TPS status in the United States, allowing them to stay legally.

Bilateral relations and background

Previously, US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin reached an agreement on diesel purchases. This decision drew sharp criticism from Kyiv, with Ukrainian leadership emphasizing that gifts to the aggressor will not bring peace closer.

The Ukrainian head of state also warned that after halting sanctions against the Russian dictator, there could be further decisions favoring Russia.
