Earlier, Catherine’s brother Mikhail Tovmash and the Moore County Sheriff’s Office reported a double murder that occurred in a private house on the morning of February 14. According to law enforcement officers and the girl’s family, Catherine and her lover were shot by an ex-boyfriend, 25-year-old Caleb Hayden Fosno from Ohio. To get to the girl’s house, the suspect drove seven hours. He was detained.

Catherine moved to the United States about two years ago. This is the second tragedy with a young Ukrainian refugee in North Carolina. In August 2025, 23-year-old Irina Zarutskaya was killed in the same state.
