Great Britain and a number of NATO countries blocked a plan for additional financing of military aid to Ukraine

The proposal to spend 0.25% of GDP on supporting Kyiv was not supported by key allies, and the NATO initiative did not receive sufficient consent.

Great Britain rejected NATO’s plan to introduce an additional mechanism for financing military aid to Ukraine. This was reported by The Telegraph, writes Sudovo-Yurydychna Gazeta. The PromPolitInform portal informs.

According to the publication, London, together with France, Spain, Italy and Canada, opposed the initiative to allocate 0.25% of the GDP of the Alliance member countries for military support to Ukraine. As a result, the proposal was blocked during internal NATO discussions.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte admitted that the plan would not be implemented due to the lack of sufficient support. According to him, the issue will not be brought forward for further consideration at the moment, without specifying the positions of individual countries.

As the publication notes, Rutte expected to bring the initiative up for consideration during the upcoming annual NATO summit in Ankara (Turkey), but consensus could not be reached.

Discussions in the Alliance concerned the possible strengthening of long-term support for Ukraine. According to NATO sources, some countries that already spend more than 0.25% of GDP on military assistance to Kyiv generally supported the idea, but it did not receive unanimous agreement among all members.
