Ukrainian steel under attack: new EU restrictions could effectively block exports

Ukrainian steel companies warn of serious risks for the industry due to the possible introduction of new trade restrictions by the European Union. According to preliminary estimates, the quotas and technical requirements proposed by the EU could narrow market access so much that exports of Ukrainian steel to the bloc will effectively stop. As reported by the PromPolitInform portal, this was reported by Pershyi Biznesovyi.

The European Union is considering updating the regime of protective measures on steel, which could also affect Ukrainian producers. Market participants emphasize that such changes will be a blow at a time when the metallurgy industry is trying to recover from large-scale destruction, logistical restrictions and a drop in production caused by the war.

According to industry representatives, the new rules could lead to a sharp reduction in exports — in some segments, up to a complete cessation of supplies. This will create additional pressure on enterprises that are already operating at the limit of profitability and provide a significant part of the country’s foreign exchange earnings.

The Ukrainian government and specialized associations are negotiating with the European Commission, emphasizing that strict restrictions contradict the policy of supporting Ukraine and may undermine the economic stability of the state. Kyiv calls on Brussels to take into account the war circumstances and preserve preferential access of Ukrainian steel to the EU market.

We remind you that if the restrictions come into force, the consequences could be long-term — from the shutdown of individual production facilities to the loss of part of the markets, which will quickly be occupied by competitors from third countries.
