The Russian consul will be declared persona non grata in Rumknia. Romanian President Nikusor Dan also spoke with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Romanian President Nikushor Dan announced the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Constanta and the expulsion of the Russian consul after an incident with a Russian drone that hit a residential building in the city of Galati, the PromPolitInform portal informs.
This decision was made following a meeting of the National Security Council of Romania, which was convened after the attack on the night of May 29.
As a result of the fall of a drone of the “Geran-2” type on a ten-story house, an explosion and fire occurred in an apartment on the top floor. Two people were injured, another 70 residents were evacuated.
“Last night there was a serious incident in which two citizens were injured, and all responsibility for this lies with Russia. The Consul General of Russia in Constanta has been declared persona non grata, and the consulate in Constanta will be closed,” Dan said.
According to the president, during the meeting they also discussed issues of civil protection and strengthening security measures in potentially vulnerable areas of the country.
Conversation with NATO Secretary General
Separately, Nikushor Dan had a conversation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The Romanian president called the events in Galati “the most serious security incident in Romania since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.”
According to Dan, Rutte expressed full solidarity with Romania and confirmed NATO’s readiness to defend the territory of each member country of the Alliance.
Earlier, Acting Prime Minister of Romania Ilie Bolozhan said that Bucharest is considering the possibility of imposing sanctions against Russian diplomats in response to the incident.
According to the Ministry of Defense of Romania, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation in the country, fragments of drones associated with Russian attacks on Ukraine have already been found 47 times.
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Tsoi said earlier that the fall of a Russian drone on a residential building in Galati meets the criteria for applying NATO Article 4, which provides for consultations between allies in the event of security threats.
Zakharova threatened Romania with “retaliatory measures” for the decision announced by Romanian President Nikushor Dan.
“Retaliatory measures in connection with the announcement of the Russian consul general persona non grata and the closure of the consulate general will not be long in coming,” she said.
Meanwhile, Vladimir Zelensky after the incident said that Ukraine is ready to support Romania in any necessary way.
