The newly established party Adilet has won a majority in the snap parliamentary elections in Kazakhstan. The results strengthen the position of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Катерина Коваль) citing Reuters, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
According to exit polls released by state media, the Adilet party received between 70% and 72% of voter support with a turnout exceeding 74%. In addition to this political force, four small opposition parties entered parliament, although experts consider them to be loyal to the incumbent president.
Consolidation of Tokayev’s power
The Adilet party was formed by the president’s advisors and effectively replaced the former ruling structure, Amanat. This outcome is expected to strengthen Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s influence at the state level and facilitate distancing from the inner circle of former President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
The electoral process took place following constitutional reforms that established a unicameral parliament. The updated legislation allows Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to run for a new seven-year term.
Foreign policy context
Kazakhstan is drawing attention due to its position on the war in Ukraine. Specifically, in May, Astana refused to enforce the collection of 1.4 billion dollars from the russian Gazprom in favor of Naftogaz, and in July, during a meeting with Putin, President Tokayev advocated for the cessation of hostilities and the resumption of negotiations based on the 2022 agreements.
