Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has announced plans to defend the International Criminal Court from pressure exerted by Washington. Tokyo intends to continue supporting ICC President Tomoko Akane despite US-imposed sanctions.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Едуард Ткач) citing Bloomberg, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The government of Japan views the International Criminal Court as a vital institution and intends to remain its primary financial donor. This statement was made by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi after the United States imposed restrictive measures against the head of the judicial body, Tomoko Akane.
Japan’s diplomatic efforts
Official Tokyo sought to prevent an escalation of the situation even before the sanctions were implemented. According to Sanae Takaichi, representatives of the Japanese side held multiple consultations with American partners at various levels, urging them to refrain from taking measures against Akane.
The current stance of the Japanese leadership signals a commitment to strengthening support for the ICC President. Under the Washington ruling, Tomoko Akane is prohibited from visiting the United States and accessing the American financial system.
Consequences for the alliance
Experts note that the conflict surrounding the ICC’s operations marks a rare public divergence in viewpoints between Japan and the United States. Prime Minister Takaichi emphasized that she fully shares the sense of crisis arising from American policy.
Tokyo does not rule out further diplomatic representations to Washington regarding this situation. The Japanese government will continue to uphold the independence of the judicial organ, despite pressure from its main geopolitical ally.
