Free travel for small children is available on routes to five European countries
Ukrzaliznytsia has released updated conditions for transporting children on domestic and international routes, which depend on the age of the passengers and the destination country. The company also reminded passengers about restrictions on independent travel and the absence of discounts for students on international routes. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Сергій Козачук) citing Ukrzaliznytsia, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The terms for free transportation of children without providing a separate seat on trains are determined based on the destination. Within Ukraine, as well as on connections with Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary, children aged up to 5 years inclusive are entitled to free travel. On trains to Moldova, this rule applies to children up to 4 years old, while on routes to Poland, it applies to toddlers up to 3 years old inclusive.
For older passengers who require a separate seat, a system of discounts is in place. In particular, on Ukrainian routes, children aged 6 to 13 receive a 25% discount on the ticket price. Travel to Poland, Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia for children aged 6 to 15 is accompanied by a 50% discount on the ticket price, although this does not apply to the seat reservation fee. For travel to Moldova, children aged 5 to 9 are granted a discount ranging from 62% to 64%.
Independent travel and student tickets
The regulatory framework sets age limits for independent rail travel. Within Ukraine, citizens can travel without adult supervision upon reaching the age of 14. At the same time, requirements for crossing the state border vary depending on the rules of the receiving country, so passengers are advised to check the information on the official website of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine before starting their journey.
As for students, international service does not provide special benefits for this category of passengers. In cases where trains of foreign railway operators run through the territory of Ukraine, the discount may only be applied to the ticket price, while the seat reservation fee is paid at the full rate.
Fleet renewal and art projects
The company continues to modernize its rolling stock, preparing for the introduction of a new generation of carriages. Contracts have been signed for the supply of 10 units with improved dimensions, which will allow for longer berths. Additional carriages are also deployed during peak periods to ensure passenger comfort, particularly in border areas.
In addition to technical upgrades, the carrier is implementing cultural projects. The “Art Train” began operating from Moldova, featuring carriages transformed into an art space dedicated to events and changes in society during the war. This initiative is aimed at promoting Ukraine in Europe through a unique exhibition format.
