Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo canceled and rescheduled over 120 flights
A massive drone attack on Moscow caused widespread flight delays and cancellations at the Russian capital's largest aviation hubs. Due to the UAV raid on the evening of September 2, special security procedures were introduced at Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Юлія Маловічко), according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The transport hubs decided to cancel and postpone nearly 40 departures and over 80 arrivals. Some aircraft were halted even after passengers boarded, following which special safety protocols were enacted at 22:27 local time in Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo. A number of routes were postponed to the following day due to the imposed airspace restrictions.
According to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, air defense forces repelled the evening raid. The official initially reported nine downed devices, and later the number of allegedly destroyed targets increased.
Threat to Civil Aviation
A special airspace regime is introduced when critical threats arise or unidentified objects appear. Civilian aircraft are then required to land immediately or leave the hazardous sector, while the dispatch and reception of flights can be fully restricted.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier stated that the airspace of the aggressor state is becoming dangerous for civil aviation due to the massive presence of drones. Following this, the number of flight cancellations in the Moscow region surged sharply.
