The UN General Assembly could serve as a venue for upcoming talks with the US
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the intention to use the autumn months to restart the diplomatic dialogue. According to him, prerequisites exist for a trilateral format involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia. This was reported by Ukrinform citing Axios, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The head of state noted that the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly in New York at the end of September could serve as a platform for further contacts between the Ukrainian and American sides.
Diplomatic dialogue before winter
“We have September and October to find any way to talk. Without dialogue… we will not achieve a result. I believe that President Trump will be able to find a way to truly begin the negotiation process before the onset of the cold winter,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
At the same time, the Ukrainian leader emphasized the need to maintain the state’s military strength throughout the entire diplomatic path. In the President’s view, Ukraine currently holds stronger positions at the front compared to the previous period, despite the deficit of air defense systems and ongoing Russian missile and drone strikes.
Sanctions as a leverage tool
Separately, the country’s leader appealed to American partners with a call to introduce additional restrictive measures against the aggressor. He characterized sanction pressure as a fundamental lever in any future discussions.
“Putin needs money. Putin wants money to continue the war,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy added.
Earlier, during the visit of American leadership representatives to Kyiv, the Ukrainian side received a signal about the readiness of Russian Federation representatives for negotiations. Meanwhile, a final decision regarding the trilateral format has not yet been made.
