Mass drone attack paralysed Moscow airports on October 6

Over 200 flights cancelled or delayed due to the massive strike

Moscow airports cancelled or rescheduled more than 200 flights on October 6 following a massive drone attack. Flight restrictions were imposed after the region came under fire from hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles. This was reported by Glavcom, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

The most significant disruptions were recorded at Sheremetyevo Airport, where the schedule was affected for 153 flights: 47 departures and 106 arrivals. A less intensive schedule adjustment was reported at Vnukovo, involving 51 flights, while disruptions at Domodedovo affected four operations.

Scale of the air operation

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that more than 650 drones had been detected heading towards the capital region overnight on October 6. He claimed that a significant portion of the targets were neutralised at long range, while 105 drones were downed in the immediate vicinity of the city, with reports later confirming the interception of an additional 68 units.

Fire at a strategic facility

Simultaneously with the air operation, a massive fire broke out at the Volodarska oil depot in the Moscow region. Witnesses reported that at least two fuel tanks were ablaze at the facility, which is responsible for supplying aviation fuel to the main airports of the Russian capital.

The facility is considered one of the most critical in the region regarding aviation fuel logistics. The military and political leadership of Ukraine has repeatedly emphasised that the targeted destruction of Russian oil refining and fuel infrastructure is part of a strategy to weaken the aggressor’s economic potential.

According to the Ministry of Defence, Ukrainian forces have successfully disabled over 51% of Russia’s oil refining capacity to date. These actions are aimed at limiting the capacity of the Russian military machine to continue full-scale hostilities.
