Poland strengthens military presence near the border with Ukraine

New army units will be deployed in the Lublin Voivodeship

Poland is expanding its military presence in the Lublin Voivodeship near the border with Ukraine due to growing air threats. New units will be formed and air defense systems reinforced in the region. This was reported by Glavcom, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

The plans of the defense department were announced during an event at Lublin Airport in Świdnik. According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence of Poland Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, the authorities intend to significantly increase troop numbers in the eastern direction.

Expansion of the 18th Mechanized Division

According to the head of the Ministry of Defense, the changes will affect units of the 18th Mechanized Division, the Aviation Academy in Dęblin, and the helicopter base in Świdnik. In addition, Warsaw plans to form the 18th Motorized Brigade, which will become part of the aforementioned division. „The Lublin Voivodeship is saturated with military personnel, but there will be even more of these units,” stated Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.

New facilities in Opole Lubelskie and Biłgoraj

New military facilities will appear in the area of Opole Lubelskie and Poniatowa, where the command of the new motorized brigade will be located. A separate unit with air defense elements is planned to be formed in Biłgoraj. These measures are being implemented amid ongoing air risks near the country’s eastern border.

Protection of critical infrastructure and the border

Earlier, six border crossings in the Lublin and Podkarpackie Voivodeships were put on high alert due to Russian strikes on the western regions of Ukraine. The Polish military has also strengthened border infrastructure and is assisting in setting up observation and security posts. Meanwhile, Warsaw continues discussions regarding the potential interception of Russian drones directly over Ukrainian territory at Kyiv’s request.
