Alena Shoptenko shares details about life in Austria, a new profession, and marrying an Austrian

The famous choreographer combines therapeutic practices with charity work and a life split between two countries

Famous Ukrainian choreographer Alena Shoptenko spoke about her move to Austria, professional retraining, and her recent wedding to an Austrian named Christian. She also shared her experience of integrating dance-movement therapy into rehabilitation programs for Ukrainians. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Юлія Гаюк), according to the portal PromPolitInform.

After being forced to relocate to Vienna at the start of the full-scale invasion, Alena Shoptenko focused on studying dance-movement therapy. This evidence-based approach, rooted in body-oriented practices, became the foundation of her psycho-emotional recovery work, which she implements both in Ukraine and abroad. Additionally, the choreographer actively collaborates with charitable foundations, raising funds for prosthetics for veterans.

The peculiarities of life and mentality in Austria

Living in Austria, Shoptenko notes significant differences in the social structure, particularly the high level of respect for personal boundaries and the developed social security system for the elderly. She emphasizes that Austrians tend to be emotionally reserved but demonstrate deep responsibility in public affairs. The dancer herself has re-evaluated her views on professional achievements, moving away from an exhausting schedule in favor of a more sustainable approach to her own needs.

Wedding and the integration of Ukrainian traditions

Alena’s recent wedding to an Austrian named Christian took place in a castle in Lower Austria. The ceremony was a blend of two cultures: the couple followed the Ukrainian tradition of standing on a ceremonial cloth, and also performed the Austrian custom of sawing a log together, which symbolizes overcoming life’s obstacles side by side. The choreographer’s husband, who works in security and risk management, has visited Ukraine multiple times and is deeply involved in helping the country through humanitarian missions.

Film debut and future plans

Shoptenko’s professional journey now includes a new experience: participating in the filming of the comedy movie Krashanky 2.0. Although the artist emphasizes that she does not consider herself an actress, she calls this step an important part of her personal development and support for Ukrainian cinema. In the future, she plans to complete her certification in Shadow Work and continue working on social projects aimed at supporting Ukrainians.
