Athens and Madrid rejected requests for the supply of air defense ammunition
The governments of Greece and Spain have decided not to transfer missiles for Patriot surface-to-air missile systems to Ukraine. The refusal came despite the fact that the service life of some of the Greek munitions is nearing its end. This was reported by Glavcom citing The Telegraph, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
Official Kyiv contacted Greek authorities with a request for the provision of approximately 200 PAC-2 type missiles. These munitions are designed to intercept aerial targets using Patriot air defense systems; however, the Greek side rejected the proposal, choosing to retain its own stockpiles.
Status of Greek armaments
According to information from the Kathimerini publication, a significant portion of the missiles currently in service with the Hellenic Air Force were manufactured about 23 years ago. This indicates that the technical service life of these interceptors is expiring, yet even under these conditions, the country did not agree to the transfer.
Position of Spain
Spain, which also operates Patriot systems, reached a similar decision. As a result, Ukraine will not receive additional interceptor missiles from either of these two European nations to bolster its defenses against Russian aerial and ballistic missile attacks.
Situation in the EU
The issue of replenishing ammunition stocks for air defense systems remains critical for Ukraine. Meanwhile, EU defense ministers, during a meeting on September 28, did not undertake any new commitments regarding the supply of interceptor missiles for such air defense systems.
