Estonian forces to study Ukraine's expertise in subterranean fortifications

Ukrainian Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara met with Estonian Defence Minister Martin Herem on October 10, 2026, to discuss military cooperation. The officials agreed to establish joint defence enterprises, share intelligence data, and execute combined security projects. Tallinn will also adopt Ukrainian methods for constructing modern fortifications. This is reported by the portal PromPolitInform, citing information from the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.

During the talks, the defence chiefs assessed current frontline developments and reviewed the immediate requirements of the Ukrainian Defence Forces. Enhancing the defence capabilities of both nations through collaborative initiatives served as the primary focus.

Additionally, the delegations outlined prospects for creating joint defence industry ventures and established procedures for exchanging operational and technical data to address emerging security risks.

Ukrainian Fortification Experience for Estonian Defence

The meeting highlighted the practical application of Ukraine’s battlefield insights. At the request of the Estonian delegation, Ukrainian officials delivered a detailed presentation on designing and constructing subterranean defensive structures.

“Ukraine is scaling fortification solutions based on actual wartime experience. We know how to build fortifications and adapt them to new threats. I am confident this expertise will prove valuable for Estonia,” stated Ukrainian Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara.

Financial Assistance and IT Coalition Leadership

The Ukrainian side expressed gratitude to Estonia for its consistent military assistance, including the allocation of 0,25% of its GDP to support Ukraine. Officials also acknowledged Tallinn’s leadership in the international IT coalition assisting Ukraine’s military.
