German Chancellor Names the Only Path to Negotiations with Putin

Friedrich Merz criticized the Washington and Moscow diesel fuel agreement

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that russia will agree to serious negotiations on ending the war only under heavy pressure from Western states. He emphasized the need not only to maintain current sanctions against Moscow, but also to strengthen them in response to aggression. At the same time, the German head of government expressed disagreement with the recent agreement between the US and russia regarding supplies of russian diesel fuel. This was reported by Glavcom citing Bild, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

The German government leader made this position clear against the backdrop of Washington’s arrangements with Moscow, which provide for the export of russian diesel fuel. In his conviction, economic restrictions and sanctions pressure remain invariably important instruments of influence over the russian leadership.

Friedrich Merz noted that Berlin has taken note of this decision by the American administration, yet considers it completely unacceptable for the European space. According to the politician, the German authorities will continue to insist on a sanctions course, although he did not specify concrete steps to counter Washington.

Energy strikes and sanctions

A separate factor for maintaining a tough stance is the continuous russian shelling of peaceful Ukrainian energy infrastructure. In the opinion of the German Chancellor, such attacks prove the urgent need for additional pressure on the aggressor.

«Considering Moscow’s ruthless attacks on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure, we must even intensify these sanctions», — said Merz.

He emphasized that Western restrictions must remain in effect until the russian side demonstrates a genuine readiness for constructive dialogue.
