Germany rejects Trump’s demand for elections in Ukraine

The German Foreign Ministry emphasized the impossibility of ensuring free elections across the entire state during the war

Germany does not support the demand of US President Donald Trump to hold elections in Ukraine under current conditions. The German Foreign Ministry stressed that it is currently impossible to guarantee a free and fair vote throughout the entire territory of the country. This was reported by Ukrinform, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany for Europe Gunter Krichbaum, speaking ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, stated that Berlin does not share the position of the American leader regarding the necessity of an electoral process in Ukraine. The official emphasized that current legal and security conditions do not allow for the implementation of a free and fair vote that would cover all regions of the country.

International legal status of Ukraine’s territories

According to Gunter Krichbaum, Germany maintains its position of non-recognition of the occupation of Ukrainian lands by russia. As parts of the state remain under enemy control, any elections held under such conditions cannot be considered legitimate, which is supported by the historical precedent of non-recognition of voting results organized by the rf after 2014.

Economic pressure on the russian federation

The German Foreign Ministry representative also expressed opposition to the agreements between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin regarding the supply of russian diesel fuel. Krichbaum called on the international community to increase sanctions pressure on moscow, noting that every currency unit earned by russia from energy sales is channeled into financing its war machine and the production of new weapons systems to continue the aggression against Ukraine.
