Changes affect devices using access certificates for Windows Update
Microsoft has warned about the need to update security certificates for Windows, otherwise devices will lose the ability to receive updates in 2027. The current certificates are set to expire in May and June. This was reported by Windows Message Center, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
Microsoft Corporation has announced that to ensure the stable functioning of the update system, users should verify that they have the necessary digital certificates. These security measures are linked to the rotation of certificates, which are set to expire on May 17 and June 19, 2027. Devices that do not undergo the appropriate procedure will be disconnected from Windows Update servers after these dates.
Requirements for different Windows versions
Owners of most modern systems that regularly install monthly updates will not need to take any additional action, as new certificates are already integrated into current versions of the OS. Specifically, users of Windows 11 version 25H2 and newer do not need to change any settings.
At the same time, users of Windows 11 version 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 must install a security package no later than September 2025 to ensure proper operation until June 19, 2027. For other supported versions of Windows 11, as well as Windows Server 2022 and Windows 10, the requirement is to install the July 2026 patch.
Features for corporate systems
Special conditions apply to versions of Windows 10 Enterprise 2019 LTSC, as well as server versions 2019 and 2016. For these systems, it is mandatory to install the update from July 2026, which will allow for extending the operation of certificates until May 17, 2027.
It is worth noting that these restrictions do not apply to devices receiving patches through the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). For all other configurations not included in the list of supported systems, the developer strongly recommends upgrading to the latest versions of the operating system.
