Multilayered air defense, countering jet drones and deep strikes: Yevhenii Khmara on Ministry of Defense priorities

The ministry plans to scale up engine production to 10,000 units per month

The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine is focusing on developing a multilayered air defense system, deploying interceptor drones, and expanding long-range strike capabilities. The agency is also working to scale up the production of jet engines to meet the needs of the Defence Forces. This was reported by АрміяInform, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

The foundation of Ukraine’s airspace defense remains an echeloned system that combines various types of assets: from surface-to-air missile systems and MANPADS to turrets and electronic warfare systems. An important element of this architecture is the aviation component, particularly F-16 and Mirage aircraft, the effectiveness of which is constantly being improved through better coordination and pilot proficiency. The Ministry of Defence is working to ensure regular maintenance for these aircraft, which will allow for an increased presence on combat duty.

Combating jet drones

A separate priority has become repelling jet drone attacks, which reach speeds of 800 km/h. To intercept such targets, Ukraine is already utilizing specialized interceptor drones that have demonstrated high effectiveness, particularly during combat tests of the “Bars” systems. In addition to the air component, the use of large-caliber turrets with “machine vision” functions is being actively scaled up to counter UAVs, with hundreds of units currently in operation.

Regarding the ballistic threat, the ministry’s strategy includes both accelerating the receipt of missiles from partners and asymmetric actions, such as destroying enemy launchers. During the last period, the Defence Forces hit eight such systems. At the same time, work continues on expanding “middle strike” and “deep strike” capabilities, the latter of which have already disabled 51% of Russia’s oil refining capacity, inflicting systematic economic damage on the enemy.

Defense industry development

To ensure these tasks are met, the state is stimulating the domestic defense-industrial complex, particularly in the area of jet engine manufacturing. A significant increase in production volume is planned, with a target demand of about 10,000 engines per month for 2027. The Ministry of Defence also supports the deferment from military service for specialists at defense enterprises fulfilling critical state orders.

On the issue of arms exports, the ministry is preparing a mechanism through which products manufactured in excess of the needs of the Ukrainian army can be sold abroad. A portion of the revenue generated from such operations is intended to be directed toward further financing the needs of the Defence Forces of Ukraine. This model is expected to become an additional tool for supporting the defense sector and stimulating the development of industrial capacity.
