Over 70 MEPs urge the EU summit to maintain sanctions pressure
A group of European Parliament members has urged EU leadership to reject US President Donald Trump's proposals to ease pressure on Russia. The appeal was signed by more than 70 representatives of leading political groups ahead of the European Council meeting. This was reported by Ukrinform, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
More than 70 members of the European Parliament have appealed to European Council President Antonio Costa and EU leaders demanding a firm stance in support of Ukraine. The authors of the document emphasize that the European Union must not open its market to Russian diesel or other energy carriers.
Demands for the European Council Summit
The letter states that the EU cannot make any concessions to Moscow until a lasting peace and ceasefire are achieved. Politicians insist on accountability for war crimes and the crime of aggression, as well as mandatory reparations for destruction.
The European lawmakers sharply criticized Washington’s recent steps. Specifically, they urged avoiding the false path of a so-called energy truce and continuing the course toward a complete rejection of Russian energy resources.
Sanctions Restrictions Against Moscow
Among the main demands for the upcoming summit in Brussels is the introduction of a complete embargo on Russian oil and gas. Additionally, MEPs demand the development of a new sanctions package aimed at significantly limiting Russian budget revenues from energy exports.
«Ahead of the European Council meeting, we call on you to make a resolute and united statement confirming the EU’s position that the Union will not open its market to Russian diesel or other energy carriers…», the appeal reads.
The document was signed by representatives of Renew Europe, the European People’s Party, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, the Greens/EFA, the European Conservatives and Reformists, and The Left. The meeting of EU leaders will take place on October 15–16 in Brussels.
