Giorgia Meloni criticized the US energy agreement with Moscow regarding fuel
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that Ukraine's capitulation to Russia would mean a return to the practice of forcible subjugation of European states. She emphasized that supporting Kyiv remains a necessary condition for achieving a just peace, and concessions to Moscow could only strengthen its positions. This was reported by Glavcom, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The head of the Italian government noted that the Russian army launched a new campaign of strikes against Ukraine’s critical infrastructure and civilian facilities due to failures on the battlefield. According to her, the Kremlin seeks to break Ukrainian resistance through cold and darkness, yet the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the support of Western partners managed to deter the enemy’s advance. The politician emphasized that halting military aid to Kyiv will lead not to peace, but to the conquest of an independent country.
Historical parallels and threats of occupation
During her speech, the head of government recalled Soviet military interventions in Hungary and Czechoslovakia during the Cold War. She stressed that Europe has already faced the limitation of state sovereignty through Moscow’s military force. Any political arrangements cannot recognize the capitulation of freedom as genuine peace, she added.
Risks of the energy deal
The Prime Minister paid separate attention to the agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russia on diesel fuel supplies, calling it a very risky step. In her view, this decision could provide the Russian budget with additional revenues and weaken economic pressure on Moscow. At the same time, she supported the idea of an energy truce that would entail halting strikes against Ukrainian energy facilities.
