Crews of both vessels were safely evacuated without any injuries reported
Two Singapore-registered container ships were struck by unknown projectiles while passing through the Strait of Hormuz on October 13 and 14. One vessel sank following a fire, while the other managed to reach a safe anchorage under its own power. This was reported by USM — ports and shipping citing Reuters, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The incidents occurred in a vital maritime corridor used for significant volumes of global cargo shipping. The events have raised concerns among international shipping participants regarding navigation safety in the region.
Attack on container ship GFS PRIDE
The vessel named GFS PRIDE was struck on October 13, sustaining severe damage. A fire subsequently broke out on board, which ultimately caused the container ship to sink.
All 21 crew members were safely evacuated from the stricken ship. Maritime authorities confirmed there were no injuries and no Singaporean citizens among the crew.
Damage to vessel GFS GISELLE
The following day, on October 14, a second vessel named GFS GISELLE was hit. The container ship suffered hull damage but retained the ability to navigate under its own power.
All 22 members of the GFS GISELLE crew remained safe and unharmed. The ship successfully reached a designated safe anchorage.
Actions by maritime authorities
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore confirmed that no Singaporeans were on board either vessel. The administration continues to maintain contact with the ship managers.
Relevant authorities are closely monitoring the unfolding situation in the area. Investigations are underway to determine the origin of the projectiles that hit the ships.
