Alberta medical facilities have implemented an 'orange code' due to the influx of victims
On October 17, 2026, a major fire broke out at the Wainwright military base in the Canadian province of Alberta, resulting in human losses. The number of injured was so high that local hospitals sought assistance from medical facilities in Edmonton. This was reported by Glavcom citing CBC, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the alert regarding the emergency incident at the base’s training grounds was received shortly after 16:00 local time. Canadian Minister of National Defence Bill Blair confirmed that there were fatalities and injuries, although exact figures have not yet been released.
Healthcare system strain
Due to the critical influx of patients, hospitals in the region activated an ‘orange code’, a special protocol for responding to mass casualty emergencies. Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, described the scale of the incident as something that happens only once every 15 to 25 years.
Medical personnel operating under emergency conditions were forced to divert patients to Edmonton, located approximately 180 kilometers from the incident site. Citizens are being asked to avoid visiting the University of Alberta Hospital to free up all available resources to assist the injured.
Weather conditions and scope of the disaster
Wainwright Mayor Bruce Pugh suggested this could be the most tragic event in the municipality’s history. At the same time, he assured that the fire had been contained, posing no immediate threat to the town’s residents.
Firefighting efforts were hampered by adverse weather, specifically a storm with wind gusts of up to 100 km/h that struck Alberta that day. The elements not only contributed to the rapid spread of the flames to surrounding rural lands but also caused infrastructure damage, complicating the work of rescue services.
Chair of the NATO Military Committee Giuseppe Cavo Dragone expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, emphasizing the solidarity of all 32 Alliance nations with the Canadian military. An official investigation to determine the cause of the fire is ongoing, but details of the incident remain undisclosed at this time.
