Defence Ministry Cuts Military Medical Exam Period for Freed POWs to 30 Days

Medical examination for former captives will take place four times faster

The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has reduced the deadline for medical examinations by military medical commissions for personnel released from captivity to 30 days after repatriation. This decision is aimed at speeding up access to social benefits and state payments. This is reported by the portal PromPolitInform, citing information from the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.

The Ministry of Defence made corresponding amendments to the Regulation on Military Medical Examination in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, approved by the defence authority’s decree No. 402.

Prior to these changes, standard timeframes applied to all personnel. They stipulated that conclusions regarding the need for further medical care and the causal link of concussions, wounds, injuries, or illnesses had to be issued no later than four months after admission to a healthcare facility.

New 30-Day Period for Repatriated Personnel

Freed service members returning from Russian captivity now follow an accelerated procedure. They will undergo the military medical board examination within 30 days of their repatriation.

Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine Liubov Galan noted that shortening the time required to confirm medical needs and determine the cause of health issues will significantly expedite access to state guarantees.

Social Guarantees and Financial Benefits

According to the official, injuries or illnesses sustained during detention are legally recognized as directly related to the defence of the homeland.

Establishing this connection entitles service members to additional remuneration throughout their medical treatment. Furthermore, in cases where disability or partial loss of working capacity is confirmed, it grants the right to a one-time financial aid payout and an increased pension.
