9.5 million Ukrainians ended up abroad due to war, — Zelenskyy

Large-scale migration has affected a quarter of the country's population

Due to the full-scale aggression of russia, 9.5 million citizens have found themselves outside Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this during an online speech at the Hudson Institute. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Сергій Козачук) citing Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

The head of state emphasized during an online meeting at the Hudson Institute that the consequences of the russian invasion are measured primarily by broken human destinies. The hostilities have resulted in millions of citizens losing their homes and jobs.

Migration indicators

The specified number of migrants accounts for a quarter of the total population, which previously stood at 40 million people. The president highlighted the humanitarian dimension of the catastrophe caused by the actions of the russian leadership.

At the same time, the Institute of Demography and Quality of Life Research recorded a total decrease in the population to 28.5 million people. Ella Libanova, the director of the institution, named mass emigration as the main driver of this decline.

Demographic situation

She noted that mortality rates due to frontline clashes play a lesser role in overall statistical population decline compared to migration. Movement processes are accompanied by new administrative requirements from European institutions.

Processing temporary protection abroad may now require military registration documents. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine previously provided detailed explanations on this matter for citizens residing in European Union countries.
