Ukraine has created an international F-16 fighter squadron, comprising Ukrainian and Western pilots, including those from the US and the Netherlands. This was reported by Apostrophe, as reported by Intelligence Online. PromPolitInform reports.
According to the source, the unit was formed by the Ukrainian Air Force in recent weeks for rapid deployment. The squadron currently plays a key role in the air defense system of the Kyiv region, which is regularly attacked by Russian missiles and drones.
The unit includes American pilots with combat experience in Afghanistan, as well as Western veterans who have carried out missions in the Middle East. Among the Dutch pilots are graduates of leading European aviation schools specializing in interception and modern air operations.
As Intelligence Online notes, the foreign pilots serve on temporary contracts, providing for six-month rotations with the possibility of extension depending on needs. Unlike the Ukrainian military, who are integrated into the standard chain of command, Western specialists have the status of specialized contractors.
Crews of the international squadron are often called upon to conduct night patrols during massive attacks, allowing for a faster response to threats and more effective use of radar coverage. One of the key contributions of the Western pilots is their experience with the F-16’s high-precision sensor systems, particularly the Lockheed Martin Sniper targeting pod.
This electro-optical and infrared system enables target identification at long ranges, tracking of fast-moving objects, and precise engagement even in adverse weather conditions. According to sources close to the General Staff, the Ukrainian pilots already had a basic understanding of these technologies, but full mastery required extensive training on Western platforms. The article also notes that the international squadron participates in repelling Russian air strikes almost daily, intercepting Kalibr and Kh-101 missiles, Geran-5 drones, and other aerial targets.
The Netherlands is donating F-16 fighter jet simulators to Ukraine for training Ukrainian pilots. Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans announced this ahead of the NATO defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels on February 12.
