The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has transferred three powerful autotransformers to NPC Ukrenergo as part of the Emergency Recovery and Reconstruction Project. The equipment arrived at the end of last year, its total cost exceeds $20 million, the company said.

Chairman of the system operator Vitaly Zaichenko stressed that this scarce high-voltage equipment is critical for the stabilization of the Ukrainian energy system after massive attacks by the Russian Federation, informs the portal PromPolitInform.

The Japanese side expressed admiration for the sustainability of Ukrainian power engineers and confirmed its readiness to continue to support the security and long-term sustainability of Ukraine’s power grid.

“When the energy infrastructure of Ukraine is subjected to unprecedented attacks, the restoration and strengthening of high-voltage facilities becomes critical to the stability of the entire country. Thanks to this support, Japan expresses solidarity with the people of Ukraine and the energy workers who work tirelessly to provide people with light. We deeply admire the sustainability and technical excellence of the NPC Ukrenergo team. JICA strives to continue to provide assistance to improve the reliability, safety and long-term sustainability of Ukraine’s energy system,” said Osamu Hattori, Head of the JICA Office in Ukraine.

Delivery of equipment was technically difficult due to the huge size: the weight of each transformer reaches almost 200 tons, and the height exceeds 4 meters. The logistics route was laid bypassing many bridges and overpasses that are not designed to transport such super-heavy objects along with tractors and special platforms. Despite these challenges, the equipment has already arrived at its destinations and will be used to strengthen the reliability of energy supply in the most affected regions.

This assistance is another stage of long-term cooperation between Ukraine and Japan in the field of energy security. Thanks to the new transformers, Ukrenergo will be able to replace equipment damaged as a result of the aggression of the Russian Federation and provide backup capacity for critical infrastructure. Currently, preparations are underway for the installation and integration of new units into the country’s common energy network.

Earlier, Shmyhal reported that the capital is expected to launch an additional generation of 9 MW, which will help partially compensate for the deficit after massive strikes of the Russian Federation on the night of february 7.

During a working trip, Shmyhal examined electricity facilities in the western regions and checked how the work on strengthening the power system was going. He focused on the restoration of damaged equipment, the construction of protective structures and the development of opportunities for the import and export of electricity.
