Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez criticized the US operation against Iran, calling it a violation of international law.
The statement of the head of the Spanish government quotes El Pais, informs the portal PromPolitInform.
Pedro Sanchez called on the United States, Israel and Iran to cease hostilities and return to diplomacy. He stressed that Spain condemns the Iranian regime, but the actions of all parties to the conflict are contrary to international law.
“This crisis affects us all, and we demand the full determination of the United States, Iran and Israel to stop before it’s too late. One illegal act cannot be answered by another; so the greatest disasters in the history of mankind begin… In short, the position of the Spanish government can be summed up with the words: “No to war,” said the Prime Minister.
Sanchez also drew historical parallels with the Allied war against Iraq, which was led by the United States, noting that the then operation caused prolonged instability in the region.
“Twenty-three years ago, another U.S. administration dragged us into a war in the Middle East. The war, which, as then claimed, was fought with the aim of destroying Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction, establishing democracy and ensuring global security. But in fact, from the perspective of time, it had the opposite effect, causing the greatest wave of instability that our continent experienced after the fall of the Berlin Wall,” said the head of the Spanish government.
Criticism from Madrid intensified after Donald Trump announced his intention to “stop all trade with Spain” amid its disagreement with the American military operation against Iran.
This is about Spain’s decision not to provide the United States with access to air bases on its territory for actions against Iran.
The Spanish government, in response to threats by the US president to stop “all trade,” called on him to respect relations between the two states.
