The UN Security Council will hold a meeting on August 24, on Ukraine's Independence Day. Diplomats will focus on the consequences of the ongoing Russian aggression. This was reported by Ukrinform, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The meeting was initiated by five European member states of the Security Council: the United Kingdom, Denmark, France, Greece, and Latvia. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen will chair the event, as his country holds the Security Council presidency in August.
Meeting logistics
UN Under-Secretaries-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo and for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher are set to brief the Council. The session is scheduled to begin at 15:00 New York time, which is 22:00 Kyiv time.
International diplomacy context
The previous official emergency meeting of the Security Council regarding the situation in Ukraine took place on July 27. Additionally, on August 10, Security Council members held an informal meeting under the Arria-formula to discuss violations of international humanitarian law by the rf regarding the treatment of prisoners of war and civilians.
