Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Andriy Melnyk sharply criticized narratives about the alleged historical unity of Ukrainians and Russians. The diplomat recalled that during the last meeting of the UN Security Council on February 24, the Russian Permanent Representative Vasyl Nebenzya “once again repeated the familiar nonsense about the alleged historical unity of Ukrainians and Russians.” This was reported by UA.NEWS, according to the PromPolitInform portal.
“He even mumbled something about Kyivan Rus, which we, Ukrainians, allegedly sold for 30 pieces of silver,” Melnyk said.
The Ukrainian diplomat emphasized that at the beginning of the 12th century, Kyiv was the capital of the largest and one of the most powerful states of medieval Europe. “And the territory of modern Moscow was then just a swamp where frogs croak,” he added.
Melnyk also recalled the aggressive actions of Moscow rulers in the past. In particular, under the leadership of Prince of Vladimir-Suzdal Land Andrei Bogolyubsky in 1169, Kyiv was plundered and many of its inhabitants were killed.
“Moscow betrayed Kyiv. And it still continues this same cruel policy, bombing Kyiv, destroying our Golden Gates, raping and killing civilians,” the permanent representative emphasized.
Addressing the Russian delegation, Melnyk noted that Ukrainians do not need “distorted historical lessons about the imaginary unity of peoples.”
“Kyiv has stood strong for over 1,000 years and will stand for another thousand. It will flourish, remain invincible, and Russia will not be able to conquer it,” he emphasized.
At the end of his speech, the ambassador addressed in Russian: “The ball is over, the candles are out… Take your overcoat – go home.”
“So take your greatcoats and get out of Ukraine!” – added Melnyk.
In addition, the permanent representative of Ukraine to the UN rejected the accusations of the Russian permanent representative Vasyl Nebenzya about the harm that Ukraine allegedly causes to the civilian population of the Russian Federation, emphasizing that these statements have no confirmation.
Recall, on March 23, the UN Security Council convened for an emergency meeting at the request of Ukraine to discuss the long-term missile terror by the Russian Federation.
