As a result of the Russian attack on the night of May 24, about 40% of the exhibits of the Chernobyl Museum in Kyiv were irretrievably lost after the strike of the Russian Federation, the rest were taken out to analyze the condition.
This was announced by the State Historical and Architectural Reserve “Ancient Kyiv” on Facebook, the portal PromPolitInform informs.
“The National Museum “Chernobyl,” the opening of which after repair was reported a few days ago, is almost destroyed,” the report said.
Numerous architectural monuments were damaged, in particular Contract House.
The Chernobyl Museum was opened on April 25, 1992 at the initiative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in the specially reconstructed historical building of the Fire Kalanchi – an architectural monument of the early 20th century, which later housed the Podolsk fire station (here and in the neighboring building in the 1980s housed the Kyiv Regional Fire Department, which took the brunt of extinguishing the fire at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant). In 1996, the museum was granted the status of National.
Rescue work continues
Rescuers of the State Emergency Service for more than 15 hours eliminated fires that arose as a result of a combined Russian attack on our cities and communities. Dismantling of dangerous structures continues to this day.
40% of the exhibits of the museum “Chernobyl” destroyed
“With today’s strike, Russia tried to destroy not only life, but also memory. About 40% of museum objects from the exposition of the National Museum “Chernobyl” are irretrievably lost,” the Ministry of Internal Affairs said.
It is noted that rescuers and museum staff immediately after the impact began to evacuate the exhibits. In particular, they managed to save items from the storage facilities, a picture of Maria Prymachenko and the flag of Ukraine, which was installed at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant immediately after the de-occupation in 2022.
