Kurt Volker stated that Ukrainian technologies, drones, and artificial intelligence-based systems are already shaping a new model of modern warfare that NATO countries are studying with increasing attention
Ukraine is no longer merely defending itself against Russian aggression—it is shaping a new philosophy of modern warfare. What seemed like science fiction just a few years ago is now becoming reality on the battlefield thanks to Ukrainian engineers, military personnel, volunteers, and defense enterprises.
Former U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker stated that Ukraine’s experience should be integrated into the Western defense model. According to him, the nature of warfare has changed dramatically, and expensive weapons systems are increasingly being outperformed by affordable, mobile, and technology-driven solutions.
Today, Ukrainian drones, electronic warfare systems, naval unmanned vehicles, and artificial intelligence-powered software platforms have become a genuine breakthrough in military affairs. Ukraine became the first country in the world forced to learn how to fight under conditions of total drone dominance, continuously adapting its tactics and technologies.
Ukrainian know-how has already become a subject of study for NATO military analysts. Ukrainian forces have learned to produce FPV attack drones costing only hundreds of dollars that are capable of destroying equipment worth millions. Naval drones have effectively pushed the Russian fleet out of large parts of the Black Sea. Meanwhile, automatic targeting systems and computer vision technologies enable strikes even under intensive enemy electronic warfare activity.
Particularly noteworthy is the fact that Western nations increasingly view Ukraine not only as a recipient of assistance but also as a source of combat experience and innovation. NATO is already incorporating lessons learned from Ukrainian forces into the training of its own units and the analysis of future conflicts.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly emphasized that technology is becoming one of the key factors of victory in the 21st century.
“Today, more than 80% of enemy targets are destroyed by drones, the vast majority of which are produced in Ukraine. Warfare is evolving, and success is becoming increasingly dependent on who can implement technology and adapt to new conditions more quickly,” the President said.
Earlier, Zelenskyy also stressed: “Today, intelligence is no less important and effective a Ukrainian weapon, because modern warfare is not only a confrontation on the battlefield but also a battle of minds.”
That is why Ukraine is becoming not only Europe’s shield but also a laboratory for next-generation military technologies. While Russia continues to rely on numbers and terror, the Ukrainian military places its trust in intelligence, adaptability, and innovation.
And if the world once taught Ukraine how to fight, today the world is increasingly learning how to fight from Ukraine.
