Norway has allocated 3 billion kroner to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense

Norway will provide Ukraine with an additional 3 billion Norwegian kroner (approximately $280 million) to strengthen air defense systems. The funds will be used, in particular, to purchase missiles for Patriot systems. This was reported by the Norwegian government, Slovo i Dilo reports. The PromPolitInform portal informs.

“Ukraine’s struggle for its own defense is also our struggle. Ukraine faces Russian attacks every day. Russia continues to carry out airstrikes on civilians, Ukrainian cities and critical energy infrastructure,” Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said.

According to him, Ukraine successfully intercepts most drones and cruise missiles, but needs to strengthen its defenses against ballistic missiles.

“This is one of Ukraine’s most urgent priorities. That is why Norway is now allocating 3 billion kroner for air defense,” Støre stressed.

The decision was announced after Støre met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.

Norway, along with Denmark, Germany and Canada, plans to order new Patriot missiles directly from a manufacturer in the United States. The country will also continue to support the US-led PURL program, which coordinates the financing and transfer of modern American military equipment to Ukraine.

Due to the long delivery times, Norway is also considering purchasing Patriot missiles from countries that already have them in service in order to transfer them to Ukraine more quickly.

In addition, Oslo plans to join the Ukrainian initiative to create a special ballistic missile defense system. According to Sandvik, such a project could be important not only for Ukraine, but also for strengthening the defense of Norway and other allies.

In 2023–2025, Norway provided Ukraine with a total of 30 billion kroner in support for air defense. In 2026, the country also continues to finance measures to strengthen Ukrainian air defense.

As a reminder, in June, the Norwegian authorities announced the allocation of 1.2 billion kroner (109 million euros) to Ukraine as part of the Nansen multi-year assistance package. The money is planned to be used for the development and purchase of naval drones.

Also in May, Norway announced a new contribution to support Ukraine, allocating 2.8 billion Norwegian kroner through the PURL mechanism to finance the purchase of American weapons, which should strengthen Ukrainian defense.
