National Bank to redesign inscription on new 2,000-hryvnia banknote

The National Bank of Ukraine decided to update the font design of the denomination inscription on the new 2,000-hryvnia banknote after a public discussion regarding its stylistic similarity to one of the unofficial Cyrillic adaptations of the Russian-origin font. UA.NEWS reports this, according to the PromPolitInform portal.

The National Bank noted that it had analyzed the comments of the professional design community and concluded that even potential associations of the design elements of the banknote dedicated to Vasyl Stus with the work of a citizen of an aggressor country are unacceptable.

“Vasyl Stus is the conscience of the nation and a moral absolute. A banknote with his portrait should be flawless in every line. When the inscription on a banknote with Stus is associated with the work of a citizen of an aggressor country, the very fact of such an association is enough,” said NBU Chairman Andriy Pyshny.

Therefore, the graphic image of the denomination inscription will be made in accordance with the official Cyrillic version of the Bickham Script font, without copyright variations.

The National Bank emphasized that the 2,000-hryvnia banknote has not yet been put into production, so the changes will not affect the timing of its introduction into circulation. As planned, the new banknote will be put into circulation on September 4, 2026.

This was reported by the NBU press service.

Recall that in Ukraine, in the fall of 2026, a new 2,000-hryvnia banknote with a portrait of the Ukrainian poet, human rights activist and dissident Vasyl Stus will be put into circulation. His name has become a symbol of the struggle for freedom, human rights and the independence of Ukraine.
