On the night of August 15, 2026, the Ukrainian Defence Forces launched a strike on the Progress Rocket Space Centre in Samara. Flamingo cruise missiles were likely used for the attack. This was reported by Defense Express, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
Local residents reported the sounds of jet-powered aircraft, powerful explosions, and a major fire in the vicinity of the facility. Russian local authorities have officially acknowledged the damage to the industrial site.
Analysts point out that this plant is critical to the Russian space industry. The enterprise handles the entire technological cycle for manufacturing the Soyuz family of launch vehicles, specifically the Soyuz-2.1b.
Consequences for Enemy Military Space Programmes
These rockets are used to launch the Rassvet satellites, an analogue to the Starlink system, and most other Russian military assets. The destruction of the western part of the complex, where final assembly stages took place, could lead to the loss of both finished products and unique equipment.
Further Russian activities in the space sector may be at risk due to limited alternatives. Beyond the production facilities in Samara, the enemy has only restricted resources at the Polet plant in Omsk, where Angara rockets are assembled, yet their quantity has remained low since 2022.
