A climate phenomenon, El Niño, is forming in the Pacific Ocean and is forecast to be the strongest in recorded history. It is expected that this will make 2027 the hottest year on the planet, posing risks to harvests and global food security. This was reported by BBC Weather citing Met Office, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

Climatologists are recording ocean surface temperatures 2°C above average, and this figure could exceed 3°C as the phenomenon peaks. Such dynamics, combined with accumulated heat in the deeper layers of the water, make the current cycle unprecedented.

Changes in rainfall patterns and temperatures directly threaten the yields of key crops such as rice, coffee, and cocoa. International organizations are warning of potential food price increases and significant economic losses due to supply chain disruptions.

Scientists point to the already visible impact of the phenomenon on weather, including a shortage of monsoon rains in South Asia. At the same time, the risk of droughts, wildfires, and large-scale flooding is increasing in a number of regions, requiring global preparedness for extreme conditions.
