A massive power supply failure occurred at the Shymkent oil refinery in Kazakhstan on August 25. The incident was triggered by a significant voltage drop in the external power grid. This was reported by Ukrinform citing KazMunayGas, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The voltage drop was recorded on a 220 kV power line managed by the state grid operator KEGOC. Power supply to the facility has been fully restored, and specialists have initiated the restart of one of the processing units.
The press service of the oil and gas company noted that production units are operating as normal. The incident had no impact on daily fuel production output, and shipments are proceeding according to schedule.
Power Supply Vulnerabilities
The company emphasized that the Shymkent refinery remains completely dependent on external power supply grids. However, automatic emergency protection systems help minimize the consequences of such voltage surges.
Earlier on August 25, a fire was also reported at the Atyrau refinery, another leading enterprise in Kazakhstan’s oil refining sector.
