Drones Strike Yandex Data Centre in Russia’s Vladimir Disrupting Over 80 Cloud Services

The 50 MW facility houses 2,880 server racks and powers core cloud systems

On the night of 11 October, drones struck a data centre operated by Yandex in the Russian city of Vladimir, Vladimir Region. The attack triggered a widespread outage impacting over 80 services across the company's cloud platform. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Катерина Коваль) citing the Telegram channel of Exilenova+, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

Local residents reported a series of loud explosions during the night. The strikes directly hit the Russian tech corporation’s critical infrastructure.

The targeted facility in Vladimir boasts a power capacity of 50 MW and is designed to host 2,880 server racks. Russian authorities have not yet issued official comments regarding the aftermath of the night strike.

Widespread Outage Across Yandex Cloud

Immediately following the explosions, users across Russia lost access to everyday ecosystem products. The outages affected the Alisa voice assistant, Yandex Music, the Telemist video conferencing tool, and the Yandex Home smart living app.

However, the primary damage hit the enterprise segment and the Yandex Cloud ecosystem. Within its availability zones, over 80 core services ceased operations, including computing clusters, databases, network infrastructure, and object storage.

Artificial intelligence systems, including the YandexGPT API, went offline alongside essential developer environments and tools utilized by external business clients.

Previous Strikes on Digital Infrastructure

This is not the first destruction of the corporation’s server capacity in recent days. On 8 October, drones hit the company’s largest facility in Ryazan Region, igniting a massive blaze with smoke visible for miles and sparking service interruptions nationwide.

Following that strike, the tech firm erased data centres located across four Russian regions from its digital maps, including the damaged site.

Meanwhile, the Russian military continues targeted strikes against communications and data infrastructure in Ukraine. Following previous attacks, Kyiv-based data centre Omega Telecom shut down, while earlier strikes completely destroyed the dline.ua facility in the Ukrainian capital.
