Pope Leo XIV Calls for Safe Grain Transportation Through the Black Sea

The war in Ukraine is provoking a food crisis in the world's most vulnerable states

Pope Leo XIV, during a Sunday prayer on October 11, called on the parties to the conflict to guarantee the safety of grain exports via the Black Sea. He emphasized that food should not become a tool of military pressure. This was reported by USM — ports and shipping, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

During his address at St. Peter’s Square, the pontiff drew attention to the global consequences of the hostilities in Ukraine. According to him, the restriction of grain exports has a critical impact on the livelihoods of populations in the poorest countries, which depend heavily on external supplies.

As Pope Leo XIV noted, the daily bread of millions of people cannot be a hostage to war. The head of the Vatican shared his position via the X social network, drawing the international community’s attention to the security of maritime logistics routes.

Global Market Reliance on Ukrainian Agricultural Products

The role of Ukrainian agricultural exports is crucial for the stability of world markets. Before the full-scale Russian invasion, Ukraine accounted for approximately 10% of the global wheat market, as well as 15% of corn and 13% of barley.

Analysts point out that military actions in the Black Sea have led to the blockade of about 17% of the global grain trade. Disruptions in logistics chains caused by Russia’s actions create additional financial burdens on Ukraine’s economy.

Economic Impact of the Blockade

Expert estimates indicate significant losses faced by the state due to the inability to fully utilize Black Sea ports. The blockade of maritime infrastructure could reduce Ukraine’s GDP by 2.2%.
